Trusting creators
Trusting creators is a thing that I don’t think people talk about often enough.
I first thought about trusting creators when The Good Place was coming to a close. I trusted Michael Schur to finish the series well. Part of that trust was earned through just having watched the show, part of it was in a section of Amy Poheler’s book where they write about how they approach things in creation.
I loved Severance season one, and didn’t know how they could pull off a season 2. And they did. (Not getting into debates about different being worse, because different is just different, not inherently worse.)
So, over the last few years I think the world has been pretty privileged with quality shows and trust in creators.
Which means all the more now that they’ve announced Stargate is coming back. I’ve been a Stargate fan for most of my life. I’ve beaten an entire (large) conference centre in London on Stargate trivia. I would have probably been in still my teens the first time Joseph Mallozzi answered a question of mine online - which doesn’t sound like much in a connected social media world, but this was before social media. Direct connection was rare before social media.
The thing is, I absolutely trust Martin Gero, Joseph Mallozzi & Brad Wright. They know the series. They know the fans. As Joseph Mallozzi said in the announcement, he’s been talking to fans for 25 years. He (and everyone else involved) knows all the concerns fans have. They’re taking the right path - it’s not a reboot, it’s a continuation. They’ve got the right producers on board (because yes in scifi fans don’t just have opinions on actors or sets or other ‘obvious’ things, they have opinions on who runs the show). They announced it via the most long standing fan channels. They have Martin Gero (who wrote some of the most impactful episodes) showrunning the new series. They’re doing everything to keep the trust of literal generations of fans.
I’m so glad we live in time where I can trust the creators of things.
